| FAQ General: 1. What is Outdoor Wireless Surf? Outdoor Wireless Surf is a service that allows the user to access the Internet wirelessly at public places such as Starbuck Coffee outlets, Burger King outlets, Gelare outlets, Country Clubs and Community clubs. These public areas are called Wireless Surf Zones.
2. Why do I need Outdoor Wireless Surf? The benefit of Outdoor Wireless Surf are as follows: - Fast: Connect at broadband speed of up to 512kbps. No cables and no socket required.
- Ease of Use: You do not need to install a client software on your notebook.
- Coverage: With 160 Wireless Surf Zones and more to be added, nobody covers better than SingNet.
- Compatible: The IEEE802.11b technology is used extensively indoors (office and home) and outdoors. No need to change the wireless LAN card.
- Always Connected: All you need is the Laptop/notebook to access your email or log on to the corporate network.
Affordable: No monthly subscription.
3. How does the Outdoor Wireless Surf work? SingTel installs access points or base stations at all Wireless Surf Zones, which transmit a radio signal to a user's wireless LAN card (compliant to IEEE802.11b standard) with the Service Set Identifier (SSID) configured to SingTel. With a properly installed and configured wireless LAN card, a customer launches his Internet Browser at a Wireless Surf Zone and receives a web-based log-in page to enter his login id and password. Once his account information is authenticated, he will be connected to the Internet via SingNet. With full connectivity to the Internet, customers can access any Internet resources, as well as any corporate networks to which they have access via the Internet.
4. What is the access bandwidth? The access bandwidth at any Wireless Surf Zone is up to 512kbps. 5. Can I access my personal email at the Wireless Surf Zones? Yes, you can access your SingNet POP3 email at the Wireless Surf Zones. If you have access to your corporate email via the Internet, you can access it from a Wireless Surf Zone.
6. How many Wireless Surf Zones are there in Singapore? There are 160 Wireless Surf Zones in Singapore. 7. Where can I find the list of Wireless Surf Zones? Click here to find out the list of Wireless Surf Zones. 8. How do I identify a Wireless Surf Zone? Just look for the sign and you are in a Wireless Surf Zone. Our partners are Burger King, Delifrance, Starbucks Coffee, Gelare Café, Orchid Country Clubs, CDAN country club, SPANs Country Club, Seletar Country Club, Jurong Country Club and Serangoon Gardens Country Club. The signal coverage is typically about 50 meters in radius from the wireless access point. The coverage may wary in each Wireless Surf Zone due to the following factors a. line of sight; b. interference of signals emitted by other transmitting and/or receiving devices; c. performance of the wireless LAN card

9. How do I subscribe to Outdoor Wireless Surf? If you are a SingNet or SingTel Mobile customer, Outdoor Wireless Surf is provided free. Just pay for Outdoor Wireless Surf traffic at 20.80 cents per minute. This service has been disabled for student plan and family on line plan customers but this group of customers can enable the service via our online utility located at http://attilla.singnet.com.sg/cgi-bin/newroaming_wireless.pl Alternatively, for SingNet customers, you can subscribe to the Wireless DataSurf Plan for 50MB of data access per month at $26 (additional usage is charged at S$0.364 per MB). Click here to sign up. Prices inclusive of GST. 10. How much is the service? Regular Outdoor Wireless Surf subscription and registration are free. Usage is at 20.80 cents per minute. Wireless DataSurf Plan subscription at $26 per month for 50MB of data access (additional usage is charged at S$0.364 per MB). Prices inclusive of GST.
11. After I sign up, how many days will I have to wait till I’m being activated? 2 working days. 12. Is there a contractual period for the Wireless DataSurf Plan? There is a 3 month contractual period for the Wireless DataSurf Plan. Termination of the plan within the contractual period carries an early termination charge equivalent of the monthly subscription x number of remaining months.
13. After the 3 months contract is over, how much do I have to pay? You pay the same subscription rates as before. 14. Do I still use the same user ID and password as my SingNet account? Yes. Getting Started: 15. What do I need to get started? A laptop/notebook with the following: - Windows 98 Second Edition/2000/ME/XP operating system. - Intel Pentium II 233 MHz or equivalent and later. - 32 Mb RAM - 50 Mb of free hard disk space - 4X CD Rom Drive or higher - 16 bit PCMCIA Type II or Type III slot - Web Browser (eg. IE5) iBook running on OS10.2 and above with in-built wireless Airport card IEEE802.11b wireless LAN card with the appropriate driver installed in the portable device 16. How do I get started? Install the wireless LAN card and its driver in your laptop/notebook/PDA. Launch the wireless LAN card configuration utility or network setting. Set SSID to singtel and save it. Locate a Wireless Surf Zone. When you launch your Internet browser, the Outdoor Wireless Surf login page will be displayed. Enter your Login ID. The Login ID is your SingNet user-id followed by the SingNet domain name e.g. desmond@singnet. Enter your Password. 17. Do I need to make any changes to the settings on my notebook? Generally, you will not need to make any changes to the settings in your notebook. However, if you encounter problems getting the web-based login page even though you have configured the wireless LAN card correctly, please ensure that you have not selected “Always dial my default connection” under the Dial-up settings for the Internet Options.
18. Do I need to logout after each session or can i just switch off the notebook after the session? Yes you need to logoff after each session. To logout, just type logout. as a URL and press enter. The full stop is mandatory. If you switch off the notebook, the session will end 5 minutes after you switched the notebook off and the 5 minutes is chargeable.
Hardware: 19. What is the technology deployed for Outdoor Wireless Surf? The technology deployed complies with IEEE802.11b standard. You need to specify this standard when you buy your Wireless LAN card.
20. Where can I buy the IEEE802.11b wireless LAN card? 21. Which operating system is currently supported? Most wireless LAN card supports Windows 98 and later. 22. Which browser does Outdoor Wireless Surf supports? Outdoor Wireless Surf supports Internet Explorer and Netscape.
23. Can I connect using a Macintosh computer? Generally, PDAs that are wireless enabled based on IEEE802.11b standard, can be used at the Wireless Surf Zones. However, for any technical support, please contact your PDA vendor.
24. How do I install the software driver for my Wireless LAN Card? Please refer to the user guide provided by your wireless LAN card vendor for instructions on how to install the software driver. 25. Can I use this service at my home or office? No, SingNet offers Home Wireless Surf for your home. You may use your wireless LAN card at home if you have Home Wireless Surf. If your office is equipped with Wireless LAN, you may use the same wireless LAN card provided that your office network complies to IEEE802.11b standard and as long as you have created the respective SSID. Note that some wireless network use proprietary technology which is accessible using a specific wireless LAN card only.
26. Can I access Outdoor Wireless Surf internationally? At the moment, International roaming is offered on wired access only. 27. Whom do I call if I need help? 28. Can I disable the service? Yes, SingNet provides a utility at the Customer Care page to enable or disable Outdoor Wireless Surf. An acknowledgement email will be forwarded to your email address confirming your request.
